Our story started with infertility but that doesn’t mean adoption was ever our back up plan. This is the beautiful story God has written for our family and I still marvel at the fact I get to be Wyatt’s mama. There was never an aha moment for me, but rather small nudges from God, doors opening and a sense of peace between Travis and I as we prayed and sought the Lord on how we should grow our family.
Travis – I have always had a heart for adoption. So after discovering we were experiencing infertility, it didn’t take long for me to get excited about growing our family through adoption. We both jumped into adoption and the stories we have heard, people we have met, and experiences we have had have only reinforced the decision we made.
What Brought You Together?
Sonya – Travis and I met at a summer group through our church. We instantly connected over the mountains and all things outdoors but it took him the entire summer before he would FINALLY ask me out. Come on already! But once he did, it all moved pretty quickly.
Travis – When I met Sonya I knew it was going to be something special. She was beautiful, smart, funny and I didn’t think I was going to have a shot. We had both joined a dinner group at church and since the group lasted 8 weeks I figured I would wait to ask her out until the end just in case she didn’t feel the same way. Turns out she was waiting on me the whole time!
Why Adopt Now?
We both felt a stirring in our hearts to start the adoption process again after Wyatt turned one. We prayed about it for a few months and are more than ready to grow our family! We want Wyatt to experience having a sibling. We both can’t imagine life without our siblings and each have great relationships with them. I think it will also be pretty special for our kids to have a bond over adoption. Adoption won’t always be easy so I pray they will be able to share and lean on each other in a way we won’t understand.
Our biggest ask—prayers for the expectant mamas considering adoption. While the waiting process of adoption is hard, it pales in comparison to what these brave women are walking through.
Asking for financial help with adoption is humbling and scary. We were ridiculously blessed by our community when we adopted Wyatt. Honestly, it still floors me to look back at how much fear I had that financially we would never be able to make it work but the Lord provided. We have worked really hard this past year to save and put all of our extra Benjamin’s towards our adoption costs. We will continue to do this as we wait.
I grew up in Canada and moved to Colorado with my family when I was 10. I learned to skate when I was a 2 or 3 years old and I still play hockey once a week. I retired from coaching after Wyatt joined the family but I hope to get back into it if he decides to play hockey. I enjoy fly fishing, hiking, and camping.
Since we adopted Wyatt we have continued to work on maintaining an active lifestyle. We were back out camping when he was 4 months old and he is a regular on my back for fly fishing outings. During the day, I work as a director of sales for the 5th largest cable provider in the US.
At night and on the weekends I can be found spending time with my family, working on various projects around the house or volunteering in the community. I have been involved with the Mayfly project in Denver and just recently started a non profit focused on raising money for local charities. I love my family and they are the reason I wake up and work hard everyday.
Sonya
My family took a vacation to Colorado when I was a kid and I just knew I had to come back. I moved to Colorado from the midwest 13 years ago and it still fits like a glove. The only downfall is we don’t live close to my family whom I love dearly. Luckily we all make it a priority to see each other as often as we can.
The mountains have always been my happy place and thankfully Travis and I share this same passion. We are always finding new adventures in the mountains and love hiking and camping. We are already planning Wyatt’s first backpacking trip next summer!
I’m an outpatient oncology dietitian in a cancer center and honestly couldn’t dream up a better job. I cut back to part time when we brought Wyatt home and love our adventures together. Wyatt is always up for the zoo, playing in the park, and loves a good hike if I bring enough snacks to feed a small army.
