Anna: Every single child deserves a family. We know we can’t change the world. People tell us we are doing such amazing things for our kids, but they have no idea the way our boys have saved us. I’m a better person because of my children. I’m forever indebted to them for the grace they have taught me.
Our adoption journey is punctuated by heartbreak and redemption, and everything started in Uganda, during the summer of 2009.
I went to Uganda for the first time to spend the summer at a baby home. Immediately, I knew I had found my second home. The land and the people captured my heart completely. There were over 100 babies at the home I was volunteering in, and by the end of the summer I’d spent significant time with one child named Lucas, who had been relatively healthy when I first arrived but his health had quickly declined through my stay. I loved him. Before I left to go home I made him a promise – I’ll come back for you.

Before I could go back for Lucas, he died. I was angry at God after Lucas died. I challenged God, saying, “I don’t believe you can ever make something beautiful out of this ugly, ugly death.”
